  • Why headphones?

Without headphones, you won’t hear the 3D audio enhancements, which are significant to the impact that the sessions are capable of. With stereo headphones, we can place a sound anywhere in 3D audio space. Behind you, in front of you, below you, around you, etc. For Focus sessions, we spatially locate all of the sound in front of you - as if the sound were coming from a book you are reading or a central point on the monitor in front of you. It keeps your mind attentive to what it’s looking at. It also places other sounds around you, which helps to drown out background noise. For Sleep and Relax, it mimics the rocking of a cradle or hammock. This is one of the theories behind why our sleep sessions work so well. The ears have a lot to do with balance.

  • What are the best headphones to use with this?

Brain.fm is perfectly suited to be used with earbuds (in-ear), headphones (over-ear), or even noise-canceling headphones. As long as they're comfortable and sound good to you, go right ahead. 🎧 👍

  • Can I use speakers?

Thanks for writing in. Strictly speaking, you can use speakers, but the notable thing you miss out on without headphones is the 3D enhancements, which are a huge boost to the impact that the sessions are capable of.🎧

Focus 👓: we spatially locate all of the sounds in front of you - as if the sound was coming from a book you are reading or a central point on the monitor in front of you. It keeps your mind attentive to what it’s looking at. It also places other sounds around you, which will help drown out background noise if you’re in a loud coffee shop or a busy office.

Sleep and relaxation 🛌🛀: it mimics the rocking of a cradle or hammock. This is one of the theories behind why our sleep sessions work so well. Ears play a big role in balance.

Meditation 🙏: uses a combination of bimodal tones and music that resonates with your brain. This helps you get into and stay in the "zone."

While, it's certainly not bad to listen without them, and it will still be more effective than classical music, Spotify, binaural beats, etc- really any other audio that doesn't include this technology, so the audio absolutely can still have an impact if you want to experiment with using speakers instead.

  • Can I listen to Brain FM and other sounds?

From our experience and the way this particular app and audio is designed, we don't suggest combining Brain.fm audio with other sounds. The audio for Brain.fm is very carefully put together so that everything you're hearing is contributing to focus.

Our best suggestion would be to try listening to the "Deep Work Focus" session as a prep before you listen to online lectures, audiobooks, etc. The audio is designed for lasting impact as well, not necessarily only boosting focus as you listen.

  • Why is the Website different from the Mobile Apps?

    Mobile
Our Mobile App is designed to give you more options for specific activities you might do away from your computer.

    Web
Our Web App is designed to launch you straight into focus for deskwork (but has relax and sleep built-in too)

Note: We are currently in development of an updated web app that will include favorites, genre selection, and many more features!
